GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory over the Furman Paladins in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Thursday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Tonight's win over the Paladins marks the third shutout for the Spartans this season and second in the SoCon as UNCG also defeated High Point, 1-0 and VMI, 4-0.
In addition, The last time UNCG defeated Furman also came in a 1-0 win in the 2023 season in Greensboro.
The Spartans' win over the Paladins on Thursday ended Furman's 10-game unbeaten streak—their first loss since a 1-0 defeat to South Florida on Aug. 14 in Greenville.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the 18
th minute,
Bryanna Parkes spun the ball around past a Furman defender, finding
Ava Kiss in the right channel. Kiss dribbled inside the box, launching the ball about 12 yards out past a couple Paladins for the 1-0 lead at 17:18. UNCG controlled the slight advantage in possession in the first half by 51%.
Emma Malone secured three saves in the first 45 minutes, keeping UNCG in control, 1-0, heading into the locker room.
Furman began the second half with an offensive mindset, tallying two shots in the first five minutes, making Malone make a save. The remainder of the game would be a goalkeeper duel with Furman's Reese DeJong and Malone tallying four saves apiece in the game. However, excellent defense on both ends of the field allowed UNCG to come away with the 1-0 victory.
