Box Score Lexington, Va. – The UNCG women's soccer team (3-7-1) opened Southern Conference play with a 1-0 loss to VMI (4-6), Sunday afternoon at Patchin Field.
The Spartans outshot VMI 7-3 in the first half while Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) made three saves. Despite maintaining possession majority of the opening frame, the match was at a stalemate at halftime.
VMI took a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute when Taylor Callahan scored on a free kick taken from just outside the box. UNCG outshot the Keydets 9-5 in the second half and tallied six shots on goal overall in the match but was unable to find the net, suffering its first loss of the SoCon season, 1-0.
Buehler made five saves in the match while Cienna Rideout (Henderson, Nev./Coronado) notched two shots on goal. The Spartans outshot VMI 16-8 overall while both teams were even with three corner kicks.
Sunday marks the first time VMI has defeated UNCG since the two squads first met in 2014.
UNCG returns home for the first time since September 11, when the Spartans host Wofford at 7 p.m. Friday night.
