GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's basketball team opens the Greensboro Coliseum home schedule this week as the Spartans host the UNCG Spartan Classic. The Spartans will open play Monday night when they host Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) member Delaware. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and will be aired on ESPN3 and the ESPN App with Scott Pryzwansky and Darryl Kosciak on the call. The Spartans will also meet Longwood in the UNCG Spartan Classic, matching up with the Lancers Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Delaware will meet North Carolina Wesleyan Tuesday at 4:30 with both games Tuesday at the Greensboro Coliseum. The final game will be played Wednesday on campus at Fleming Gym when Delaware and Longwood face off at 3 p.m. Only UNCG games will be streamed on ESPN3 and the ESPN App.
The Spartans enter the UNCG Spartan Classic with a 2-1 record on the year and are coming off back-to-back wins over North Carolina Wesleyan and most recently against Ferrum College. UNCG is in the midst of four games in eight days. The Spartans are averaging 75.0 points per game while holding opponents to 50.3 points per game. UNCG is shooting 46.6 percent (82-of-176) from the field and 31.3 percent (25-of-80) from deep. Opponents are shooting just 35.4 percent (51-of-144) from the field and 26.3 percent (15-of-57) from 3-point land.
The Spartans have been a tough team to score against this season, holding opponents to just 50.3 points per game. UNCG ranks first in the Southern Conference and fourth in NCAA Division I through three games. The Spartans have not allowed more than 60 points in a game this season and are holding opponents to just 35.4 percent shooting from the field.
Five different Spartans are averaging at least 7.0 points per game while 10 different players are averaging 4.0 points per game. Senior forward Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) leads the team in scoring at 14.3 points per game and is second on the team on the glass grabbing 6.0 rebounds per game. Smith leads the team with nine made 3-pointers, hitting 36 percent from deep. Sophomore forward James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God) leads the team on the glass grabbing 8.0 rebounds per game. Dickey is second on the team scoring 9.3 points per game while shooting 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from the field ... Dickey leads the team with eight blocked shots in three games.
Freshman guard Isaiah Miller (Covington, Ga./Newton) is third on the team in scoring at 9.0 points per game off the bench. Miller is coming off a career-high 19 points against Ferrum College, shooting 8-of-11 from the field. Junior guard Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.0 points per game while sophomore Kyrin Galloway (Milton, Ga./Milton) is averaging 7.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Monday's game marks the sixth meeting all-time between UNCG and Delaware in program history. The Spartans are 2-3 all-time against the Blue Hens but the teams have not met since December 23, 2006. UNCG posted a 74-64 victory over Delaware in Greensboro. The Spartans dropped an 89-77 contest in Newark in 2005.
Delaware enters the UNCG Spartan Classic with a 2-1 overall record. The Blue Hens opened the season with a 13-point victory over Richmond before posting a win most recently against Wesley. Delaware lost a 61-53 contest to Bradley on the road. Delaware is averaging 74.0 points per game while allowing 67.3 points per game. The Blue Hens are shooting 51.6 percent (83-of-161) from the field but just 19.5 percent (8-of-41) from 3-point land.
Ryan Daly leads the Blue Hens in scoring at 16.0 points per game while grabbing 5.3 rebounds per game. Daly is shooting 50 percent (20-of-40) from the field. Eric Carter is averaging a double-double this season at 13.3 points per game and a team-high 10.7 rebounds per game. Carter is shooting 75 percent (15-of-20) from the field and 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
Kevin Anderson is third on the team in scoring at 11.7 points per game and leads the team with 11 assists per game. Anderson is second on the team grabbing 6.0 rebounds per game. Anthony Mosely is averaging 11.3 points per game and has gone to the free throw line a team-high 23 times.
