Dominant Attack Leads To Men's Soccer's First Conference Victory

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C.- UNC Greensboro's men's soccer team picked up its first Southern Conference victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon, defeating VMI 4-0 in Lexington, Va.

With the victory, the Spartans are now 5-7-2 on the season with a conference record of 1-1-2.

“We finally got rewarded for our play tonight,” said Head Coach Justin Maullin. “We have been playing well but the final product has been lacking. Very proud of the entire team tonight. VMI battled hard and is a tough team to play.”

Throughout the contest UNCG was relentless on the attack, recording 32 shots (17 on goal) against just three for VMI. Additionally, the Spartans logged 11 corners as they continued to apply pressure in the final-third.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead into halftime as Manny Apau netted his second goal of the season 14 minutes into the contest, converting on a loose ball in front of the Keydets' net. While it was UNCG's only goal in the first half, the Spartans would score three more goals in the second half.

Two of UNCG's three second half goals came in a five-minute span, as Jacob Planell scored his team-high fourth goal in the 54th minute before Micah Albert added his second goal of the season in the 59th minute.

UNCG's final goal came in the 83rd minute as Tyson Hichman also scored his second goal of the season.

The Spartans will return to action this Saturday when they face Mercer in Macon, Ga. Entering Tuesday evening's showdown with Belmont, Mercer had a 9-2-2 record and was perfect in SoCon action (2-0-0).

The Bears began the season undefeated in their first seven contests at 5-0-2. While Mercer would suffer losses to Eastern Illinois and Georgia State in September, the Bears were riding a five-game winning streak entering their showdown with Belmont.

Saturday's matchup will be the first meeting between the school's since UNCG suffered a heartbreaking loss in the SoCon Tournament Championship game last fall. After being tied 1-1 through 110 minutes, Mercer defeated UNCG 3-2 in penalty kicks.

Kickoff for the matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.
