UNCG Men's Basketball Opens SoCon Season With VMI

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – After taking three of four decisions at this weekend's Spartan Invitational, UNCG men's basketball looks to take the momentum from a 55-41 win over Appalachian State into this Sunday's Southern Conference opener against VMI. The Spartans have won their last three SoCon openers, and are on a streak of four straight victories in their first home conference matchup of the season.

-- The Spartans are 17-8 against VMI all-time, and are currently on a six-game winning streak against the Keydets

-- President Bill Clinton was still in office the last time UNCG lost to VMI at home, December 7, 1998

-- UNCG currently boasts one of the top defenses in the nation, ranking third in all of Division I basketball in both steals (64) and blocks (35)

-- No. 3 Kansas is the only team to score more than 70 points against the Spartan defense this year, the team's 52.2 points allowed per contest sit seventh in the nation

-- Shooting 63 percent from the floor, guard Kaleb Hunter leads the Southern Conference in shooting efficiency. The sophomore has scored double digits in all but one game this year, with his 93 total sitting fourth in the conference

-- The Spartans held Tennessee Tech to just 30 points last Friday, the fewest they've ever allowed to a Division I opponent 

-- Recording four blocks against Appalachian State, junior forward James Dickey moved into second in Division I program history with 184 career stuffs

-- The Spartans are the only team in the Southern Conference with more steals than the Keydets this year, whose 60 robberies rank seventh in all of Division I men's basketball

-- VMI leads the nation with 123 assists this year, with senior guard Garrett Gilkeson's 5.50 assist to turnover ratio sitting in 11th

The Spartans get back on the road to face Georgetown in Washington D.C. this Saturday at 2 p.m. The afternoon contest will be broadcast nationally on FS2, as UNCG takes on the Hoyas for just the third time in its program history.
