UNCG Women's Tennis Proves Top Squad At CCU

CONWAY, S.C. - Returning to Coastal Carolina's campus for the fifth fall season in a row, UNCG women's tennis collected 19 match wins out of a potential 27 while competing at the Lynn Stevens Invitational this Friday and Saturday.

Opening the weekend with doubles play, the Spartans took one of three from East Carolina, with Erika Barquero and Hanna Giddings combining for a 6-3 win over the Pirates' top pairing. UNCG came within just a few games of sweeping Campbell later in the afternoon, with Barquero, Sophia Adams, Giddings, Brianna Gomez, Ariana Chan  and Tayah Cross all defeating their Camel opponents. Adams, Gomez and Cross all wrapped up their matches in straight sets, while Cross neglected to give her opponent a single game in her 6-0, 6-0 victory.

Gomez and Chan would each add another straight set win against the hosting Chanticleers in their team's final singles matchup of day one. The Spartans took three of five against Coastal, with Barquero notching her third overall victory on the weekend in the top pairing.

Saturday's slate opened with back-to-back doubles matchups against the Chanticleers and Camels, where the Spartans took five of a possible six matches against the two squads. Barquero and Giddings defeated their CCU and Campbell opponents by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 respectively to round out a perfect weekend playing together, while Chan and Adams wrapped up their doubles play with a pair of wins as well.

Putting an end to an already successful weekend, UNCG capped things off with a 4-2 advantage over East Carolina in singles matches. Dropping the Pirates' top seed by scores of 6-1 and 6-4, Barquero collected her final victory of the tournament to go a perfect 6-0 in Conway. Adams, Gomez and Eugenia Camacho each downed their opponents in the final stanza of the weekend, as the Spartans ended their time at the Lynn Stevens Invitational with 19 match wins in all.

COMING UP NEXT

The Spartans will have a few weeks to rest before getting back into action at ITA Regionals on October 24th. With Wake Forest hosting the 2019 Carolina Region, UNCG will compete with some of the top Division I teams in the area while in Winston-Salem, both in singles and doubles play.
