Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spartans Start SoCon Season With Back-To-Back Wins

GREENSBORO, N.C.  –  UNCG women's basketball clinches their seventh straight win on Saturday afternoon, defeating visiting Chattanooga by a final of 49-41. In what was a defensive battle throughout, junior center Aja Boyd managed her second consecutive double-double against the Mocs, while the Spartans delivered their ninth straight win when competing in Fleming Gymnasium. The side now moves to 2-0 in SoCon play this year, their best start to the conference schedule since the 2010-11 campaign.

The Spartan defense held the Mocs to three buckets in the opening 10 minutes to take an 11-8 lead into the second quarter. UNCG scored the first four points of the game, with Boyd adding four points with a pair of rebounds.

UNCG's shooting would slow during the second quarter as the squad combined for just six points. A trio of three-pointers would help the Mocs take back the lead in the second quarter, going on a 14-2 run through the final six minutes, to take a 22-17 lead into the halftime break.

The visitors would score a pair of field goals in the first two minutes of the second half, but it was all Spartans in the third quarter, with the home team opening up a 10-4 run while holding their opponents to only six points through the entire period. Te'ja Twitty scored six in the third, on the way to a game-high 14 on the day, coming within two boards of her 24th career double-double.

The senior would add six points in the fourth quarter as well, while Boyd scored four with a pair of rebounds to complete her second double-double in as many games. The Spartans hit six of their 11 field goal attempts in the final period, along with six free throws down the stretch to help hold off the Mocs and clinch the 49-41 win.

Three Things To Know
-- The Spartans forced 15 turnovers while holding UTC to 16-for-51 shooting. Their 41 points allowed are a season-low, and the least amount of points given up to a SoCon opponent since beating Samford 64-40 on January 14, 2017

-- With 12 points and 11 boards, Aja Boyd turned in her second straight double-double and her third of the season. She's tallied double-digit rebounds in five of her last six outings, while averaging 13.0 points in her previous three appearances

-- With their ninth straight home win, the Spartans are now one away from tying their longest single season home win streak in the Division I-era

Up Next For The Spartans
UNCG wraps up its seven game homestand against the visiting Catamounts of Western Carolina, owning a 30-38 record against WCU all-time. The Spartans are currently on a four-game winning streak against the Catamounts.
