GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG women's tennis opens the spring season with a win this Saturday, defeating visiting UNCW 5-2 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
Erika Barquero and
Hanna Giddings started off the Spartans' spring campaign with a win, beating the UNCW combination of Sarah Horn and Sarah Merrill in the top doubles pairing. The Spartans would cede their remaining two doubles matches to fall behind by a point, but were dominant in the following play of singles competition, taking five of six matches.
Barquero completed her undefeated season opening performance with a straight-set victory over UNCW's top seed.
Hanna Giddings and
Eugenia Camacho helped put the Spartans in front with back-to-back two set wins, while the latter surrendered just six games in her 6-4, 6-2 set victories.
Sophia Adams won her first individual match of the season as a second seed, splitting the first two sets of her competition before clinching the Spartans' fifth victory of the afternoon on a 6-1 win.
Brianna Gomez turned in UNCG's final point of the day, coming back from a 7-5 opening set loss before recording back-to-back 6-4 results.
COMING UP NEXT
The Spartans will be looking for an undefeated opening weekend this Sunday, facing off with UNC Asheville at 3 p.m. at the Asheville Racquet Club.
