CULLOWHEE, N.C.  – UNCG men's basketball secures a fifth straight win in conference play with Wednesday's 72-58 final against Western Carolina. A 31-6 scoring run in the final 13 minutes lifted UNCG to its midweek victory, defeating the Catamounts for an eighth straight meeting.
The home team jumped out to an 11-4 advantage in the opening five minutes, before watching the visiting Spartans fight back to within a point later in the period. Both sides traded shots for the remainder of the half with the lead changing a total of four times in the final 10 minutes of the term.
The Spartans would take a 40-39 deficit into the break despite hitting six threes in the opening 20 minutes. UNCG caused nine WCU turnovers before halftime, scoring 17 points off those opportunities to stay within a possession.
UNCG's offense kicked off to a slow pace in the opening minutes of the second half, giving up a 12-2 run to open the period on a 52-41 deficit. The final 13:27 belonged solely to the visitors however, as the Spartans held the hosting Catamounts to just six points and a single field goal for the remainder of the contest.
The Spartans closed out Wednesday night's competition on a 31-6 run while holding WCU to a 26.1 shooting percentage throughout the second half. UNCG outrebounded their opponents 27-16 in the final 20 minutes en route to a 72-58 final, with 11 of those boards coming on the offensive glass.Â
UNCGÂ is now on a five-game winning streak, tying their longest of the 2019-20 season, beating their last five SoCon opponents by an average of 12.8 points per contest.Â
