Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Spartans Hold Off Terriers for Home Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- UNCG women's basketball (19-7, 8-3) topped the Wofford Terriers (14-13, 7-5), 49-45, Thursday night in Fleming Gymnasium. Aja Boyd led all players with 14 points. Fellow forward, Te'ja Twitty tallied 10 rebounds to go with seven points, just shy of her second straight double-double. Guard Tori Powell (two points, two assists) knocked down a pair from the charity stripe with 11 seconds remaining in regulation to all but seal the victory.

"I complimented Tori in the locker room," head coach Trina Patterson said. "We have a variety of players that can step up in that kind of moment. We're first in the conference in free-throw shooting. There isn't one person out there that didn't believe she'd knock them down. She was able to cut to the ball and draw the foul. She's just a great free-throw shooter."

The teams put together their highest scoring outputs in the first quarter, as Wofford got buckets from seven of their 10 active players and seemed to have the edge early on with a 19-15 lead.

The Terriers, playing without standout guard, Chloe Winink, were led by fellow guard Da'Ja Green. Shots were falling in the first half for Green (11 pts), but as the Spartans regrouped at the break, she went cold and notched just one point in the latter half.

"I'm really proud of our third quarter intensity, Patterson added. "We paid attention to our scouting report, and I think we were able to rebound the ball effectively which was key. It was great to watch us play with confidence and we just stayed united down the stretch."

The sides cooled down offensively in the third, shooting a combined 6-for-26 from the floor including 0-for-10 from long range. The adjustments made at the break to better limit the outside shot opportunities for Wofford paid off as the teams headed to the fourth quarter. Swarming defense along the perimeter and active hands on inbound plays sparked a UNCG defense to create turnovers on multiple possessions to create fast break points.

With a 45-42 lead and one minute remaining, Nadine Soliman drove through the lane for the clutch scoop and score. It was another milestone for the Cairo, Egypt native, as she hit the 2,000 point mark with nine points in the win.
