GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball grabs a pair of wins over the course of the weekend dropping visiting Fairfield and (RV) North Carolina in this year's UNCG Invitational.
The Spartans put up a 10-1 win over the Stags on Friday, giving up a run in the top half of the first before scoring 10 unanswered. Starter Kyle Bouplon moved to 2-0 on the season, spraying six hits across 6.0 innings of work with a single earned run against. Kayleigh Willis drove in four of the Spartans' 10 runs, delivering a groundout RBI in the bottom of the first, before clearing the bases on a bases loaded double in the sixth. Center fielder Makenna Matthijs and Samantha Lagrama both hit home runs during the contest, while the Stags were held to just two extra base knocks on two doubles.
UNCG's biggest win of the weekend came against the Tar Heels, facing a UNC side that received votes in the most recent set of national top-25 polls. Carolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third before the Spartans pulled one back in the fourth. Back-to-back-to-back homers from Delaney Cumbie, Willis and Lagrama gave UNCG the one-run lead in the fifth.
The Tar Heels refused to go down however, spotting a pair of runs in the sixth to make it 5-4, but the Spartans would once again come back with four of their own in the bottom half. Following up a lead off single and a pair of walks Willis hit her third homer of the week with a grand slam that would put the home team back out in front going into the final frame.
Bouplon tallied her second win of the weekend after coming in at the start of the fourth, striking out four over four innings of work, while giving up just two earned runs and shutting out UNC in the seventh.
The Spartans now sit at 7-5 on the year, and are 3-0 against ACC teams this year after defeating Clemson and Virginia the previous week.
