Spartans Drop 4-3 Decision To Bulldogs

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - UNCG women's tennis falls to hosts Gardner-Webb on Thursday, completing their four-match road stint in a 4-3 final.

The Spartans grabbed the doubles point to lead off Thursday's contest against the Bulldogs, with Hannah Gidings and Sophia Adams combining for a 6-2 win over GWU's second pairing. Tayah Cross and Brianna Gomez clinched the point for their team, forcing a tiebreaker on court three before taking that deciding frame 10-4.

UNCG would have less luck in singles with Erika Barquero and Sophia Adams taking the Spartans' lone wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. Barquero would take GWU's Miljana Ristic in straight 7-5 sets, while Adams ceded her first frame before tallying back-to-back 6-4 victories.

Eugenia Comacho nearly completed the comeback in the No. 5 seed, trading sets with the Bulldogs' Valentine Limauge, but eventually took a 7-5 loss in the deciding frame. The Spartans fall to 1-7 on the season with their 4-3 defeat at the hands of their competitors, while Gardner-Webb improves to 4-3 on the year.

COMING UP NEXT
The Spartans return home for their SoCon opener against Western Carolina this Saturday, with doubles play scheduled to start at 1 p.m. UNCG has beaten the Catamounts in six of their last seven meetings, and finished one spot ahead of WCU in last year's conference standings.
