GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG opens the Southern Conference season on a 5-2 win over Western Carolina this Saturday, playing the Catamounts in the team's first home match since February 8th.
The Spartans were dominant in singles play after dropping the doubles point, with UNCG taking five of six individual matches. The Spartans won the top three matchups, with
Erika Barquero defeating WCU's No. 1 by scores of 7-5 and 6-1.
Sophia Adams and
Brianna Gomez each took their matches in two sets as well, while Adams held the Catamount's No. 2 to just five games.
Gomez grabbed her fifth individual victory of the year, emergining victorious in the No. 3 seed by scores of 7-5 and 6-1. She, along with Barquero and Adams, move to records of 5-4 on the year, tied for a team lead.
Eugenia Camacho took her win in the No. 5 seed with back-to-back scores of 6-2, while
Ariana Chan took the sixth seed by default.
Adams also earned a doubles win on the day, combining with
Hanna Giddings for a 6-2 final over on court two. The pair have won their past three doubles matches while playing together.
The Spartans' win is their second of the year, after beating UNCW 5-2 to start the spring, opening their Southern Conference schedule on a win for the first time since 2016.
COMING UP NEXT
The Spartans will take their longest road trip of the non-conference season, heading to Winter Park, Fla. to compete against Rollins College on Wednesday, the first time the two teams have met in the spring season.
