GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG baseball takes its first loss since its season opener at Coastal Carolina this Friday, falling to visiting Appalachian State by a final of 5-1.Â
The Spartans spotted the visiting side three runs before getting their first run of the contest in the fourth inning. Hogan Windish tallied UNCG's first knock with a bloop single to right field, before back-to-back singles from Jacquez Koonce and Spencer Smith cut the Mountaineers' lead to 3-1.
Despite surrendering four runs over his six innings of work, Jake Lewis turned in another solid start for the Spartans on Friday. Just three of the runs against the lefty would go down as earned, turning in his second straight quality start and striking out five App State batters on the night.Â
The visitors would tack on two more runs during the fifth and eight innings, but despite getting five runners into scoring position the Spartans would be held scoreless through the final five frames. UNCG would strand a total of 12 base runners over the course of the night, putting an end to their six-game winning streak in a 5-1 final in favor of ASU.Â
