Men's Tennis Edges Out App State At Home

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's tennis is off to its first winning streak of the 2020 season, after taking down visiting App State by a final of 4-3 this Friday.

The Spartans move to 2-0 when winning the doubles point this year, defeating the Mountaineers' top-two pairings to take the early lead on the day. Nico Grewe and Ollie Palmer combined for a convincing 6-2 victory over ASU's top seed, while Roger Rogowski and Cooper Wyett took court two on a 6-4 final. Friday night was Wyett's and Rogowski's first as doubles partners in 2020, while the combination of Palmer and Grewe moved to 3-2 on the season.

Both sides took three of six individual matches with the Spartans taking wins in all three odd-numbered seeds. Grewe improved his singles record to a perfect 5-0 while playing App State's No. 3 Matvey Radionov, who came into the match with a team best five wins on the season. Grewe's victory would come in straight sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-7, while Palmer's would require just two frames as well. Playing the Mountaineers' No. 1, Palmer now holds a 3-0 record when representing the Spartans' top seed, earning a Friday win by scores of 6-0 and 6-4.

After taking the opening set 6-3, Rogowski would see his opponent in the fifth seed come back with a 6-4 victory of their own, to force a third set. The Spartan sophomore responded in the deciding frame with a 7-5 victory however, grabbing his second individual win of the season thus far.

With their 4-3 win the Spartans move to 3-2 on the season, and are on a two-match winning streak after defeating FGCU by the same score this past Saturday.

COMING UP NEXT
The Spartans get back to SoCon play with two straight contests against ETSU and Wofford. UNCG took a loss to both sides the previous year, coming within a point of the visiting Terriers, who claimed the 4-3 win.
