GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball claims a pair of victories on day one of the Spartan Classic, beating Oakland 1-0 to open the afternoon, followed by a 9-1 victory over Dayton.Â
UNCG opened the Spartan Classic with a 1-0 win over Oakland, with freshman Morgan Scott holding the Grizzlies to just three hits over her 7.0 inning shutout win. Neither side was able to break the scoreless tie until the sixth when UNCG scored the go ahead on a sac fly from Hannah Kincer. Scott struck out 11Â batters during her time in the circle while walking just a single Oakland batter.
UNCG grabbed its second win of the day against Dayton putting an end to the night's contest after six innings. Kayleigh Willis hit her fourth home run of the year during the contest, driving a two-run jack to left center in the first inning. The Spartans added another two runs in the third with a two-RBI double, before the Flyers grabbed their first run of the night in the fifth.Â
UNCG put an end to the night with a five-run sixth inning, defeating the Flyers by a 9-1 final. Monica Pepe led off the frame with a walk before advancing on a wild pitch. The senior came home on a Makenna Matthijs single, before a Willis walk, a Flyer error and a three-RBI double from Kincer cleared the bases for the Spartans' final runs of the afternoon.Â
