GREENSBORO, N.C. - Opening their season at home inside Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center, UNCG men's tennis kicked the 2020 spring campaign off with a win this Sunday, dropping visiting Winthrop by a 5-2 final.
The Spartans claimed the doubles point with a pair of wins in the first and second pairing. Top-seeded
Nico Grewe and
Ollie Palmer took down the Eagles' No. 1 by a final of 6-2, while
Roger Rogowski and
Alexander Zuckerman combined for a 6-1 decision at the second seed. Singles play belonged to the home team as well, with UNCG taking four of six individual matchups.
After dropping his first set 6-3, sophomore
Hugh Knapp came back with two straight 6-4 victories to claim a victory against Winthrop's top-seed. Teammate
Nico Grewe followed a similar path, ceding his opening frame at the No. 4 seed before tallying 6-4 and 7-6 wins, and claiming another point for the Spartans.
Roger Rogowski and
Jack Burkill each tallied straight set wins in the third and sixth seeds respectively, while the former gave up just two games to his WU opponent.Â
The Spartans have now beaten the Eagles in their past two meetings by identical scores of 5-2, opening this year's spring season with a 1-0 record.Â
COMING UP NEXT
The Spartans face their second Big South opponent of the week on Tuesday, engaging in their first road challenge of the spring at Radford. UNCG has won their last three matchups against the Highlanders, defeating the side 4-3 in the first week of the 2019 season.Â
