JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – UNCG men's tennis loses out to a strong ETSU team on Sunday, dropping a 7-0 decision to last season's reigning SoCon Champions.
Doubles play was tightly contested, with ETSU winning two of three matches. The Bucs claimed court two where
Cooper Wyett and
Roger Rogowski fell 6-4 to Lugo and Khamis. UNCG then levelled the match with
Jack Burkill and
Hugh Knapp defeating Badra and Este 6-4 on court three. The deciding match came down to
Ollie Palmer and
Nico Grewe who came within one point of clinching the match. The ETSU pair of Rengfigo and Mikovas eventually came through 7-6(6) to clinch the doubles point on court one.
Singles play got off to a tough start with the Bucs racing to five of six first sets.
Ollie Palmer fell to an inspired Khamis 6-0, 6-1 on court one, followed by Rogowski losing out to Badra 6-2, 6-1 on court four. Grewe then fell on court three to Lugo 6-0, 6-2 which clinched the victory for the Bucs before Wyett fell on court six to Este 6-1, 6-1 to give ETSU a 5-0 lead. Alex Zuckerman took a losing decision to Pernas 4-6, 6-1, (10-4) in a tight match over on court five.
Hugh Knapp came within a few points of victory on court two, however lost out in the end to Rengfigo 6-2, 2-6, (8-10).
The Spartans first win streak of the season is snapped as UNCG's record falls to 3-3 overall and starts 0-2 in SoCon play.
COMING UP NEXT
The Spartans get back to conference play on Tuesday where they travel to Wofford to try and pick up their first SoCon win of the season. The very next day the Spartans take a quick trip to Winston-Salem to take on No. 17 Wake Forest.
