HIGH POINT, N.C. – UNCG baseball produced a decisive victory over Triad rivals High Point University on Tuesday, defeating the hosting Panthers by a final of 11-3 at Williard Stadium. The Spartans' win puts them on a streak of five straight after sweeping UMES last weekend, while tallying their first road win of the 2020 campaign.Â
The Spartans made the Panthers pay for a few mistakes in the top of the second, with Josh Madole representing UNCG's first base runner of the afternoon on an error at first. The junior moved over on a wild pitch before Sam Koruschak's single through the right side gave the visitors the go ahead run.
Greg Hardison doubled his team's score in the fourth, following up a Ryan Caveness double with an RBI single up the middle. Caveness' double was the third of his past four appearances, while Hardison embarks on another hitting streak after going without a hit for the first time this season, last Sunday against UMES.Â
A big fifth inning secured the win for the Spartans however, as the visiting side hung eight runs on the Panther pitching staff to go ahead 10-0. With Koruschak reaching on a defensive error, Caveness' second double of the day and a Koonce single gave the Spartans their third run. Hardison delivered his second knock of the game on a two-RBI single up the middle. He would come home after a Caleb Webster double and a wild pitch, while Pres Cavenaugh drove in his first run of the day on a single through right to increase the Spartans' lead to 7-0 before the first out of the frame.Â
Two more hit by pitches and a Budzik single would put UNCG ahead by nine, while Koonce drove in his second run of the inning on a groundout. The Spartans tallied 13 plate appearances in the fifth overall, collecting eight runs on six hits.Â
Phillip Sanderson grabbed his second winning decision of the year after holding the hosting Panthers to a single run over 6.0 innings of work. The right-hander sprayed 10 hits across his time on the mound while striking out a pair, forcing the Panthers to strand 10 runners in all.Â
The Panthers scored three before the end of the contest but it wouldn't be enough to surmount the Spartans' big lead, with UNCG adding an 11th on a wild pitch in the eighth. UNCG moves to 12-4 on the season in 2020 while defeating High Point for a third straight meeting.Â
