GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's tennis picks up a win against SoCon rivals Samford on Saturday, winning 4-3 at home.
The doubles point was tightly contested with the Samford pair of Norval and Fabregas taking court one 6-4 over
Nico Grewe and
Ollie Palmer.
Roger Rogowski and
Cooper Wyett claimed court two winning 6-3 against Santantonio and Bellalouna. The deciding doubles match was clinched by
Hugh Knapp and
Jack Burkill 7-6(5) over Rebol and Andanov on court three to give the Spartans the doubles point.
Both sides took three of six individual matches with the Spartans taking wins on courts one, three and four.
Cooper Wyett fell 6-2, 6-1 on court six to Samford's Santantonio. Grewe improved his singles record to 6-2 while playing Samford's no. 4 Rebol, winning the match in straight sets 7-5, 6-1. Alex Zuckerman fell on court five to Samford's Andonov 6-3, 6-4. After taking the opening set 7-5, Rogowski managed to clinch his match 6-3 in the second set on court three.
Ollie Palmer fought hard in the second set before eventually losing to Fabregas 6-3, 7-6(2) on court two. This tied the match at 3-3 with
Hugh Knapp playing out the deciding singles match against Norval. The Spartan sophomore came back from a set down to clinch the match 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 on court one to give UNCG the win. This is
Hugh Knapp's second match-clinching win of the season, with the other coming against Florida Gulf Coast.
With their 4-3 win the Spartans move to 4-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
