GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG Athletics announces Rob Knox as the department's new Associate Athletic Director for Strategic Communications, arriving in Greensboro after five years with Towson University. An award-winning communications professional, Knox brings over 20 years of experience in several sectors of the media, including sports information, newspapers and television.
"I am honored to join the wonderful Spartan family," says Knox. "I want to thank [UNCG Director of Athletics]
Kim Record for putting her trust in me to share the wonderful stories of the UNCG athletics department. I look forward to getting to know our talented student-athletes and working with our dedicated coaching staffs and administrators. I believe my diverse background and CoSIDA leadership experience has significantly prepared me for this exciting opportunity."
During his five years at Towson, Knox held the position of Associate Director of Media Relations, while holding primary contact responsibilities for the Tigers' men's basketball program. In addition to Towson, Knox has worked at Coppin State University, ESPN in Bristol, Connecticut, as a Statistics Manager in the Statistics & Analysis department for two years, Kutztown, Lincoln University and the Delaware County Daily Times as a sports reporter.
"With over two decades working in sports journalism, Rob Knox brings the knowledge and experience to build a comprehensive and strategic approach to communicating with our UNCG constituents," says
Kim Record "He has a deep background working in both men's and women's basketball while covering high profile athletes and programs over the course of his career. Communication is key to ensuring that the great stories about our student-athletes, athletics program and university reach individuals who value the "student" in student-athlete, as well as the skills that are learned from competition. Our goal is to discover and develop champions and seek excellence every day by building a championship culture. Rob will provide the leadership to communicate this strategically. We are excited to have him join our team."
A graduate of Lincoln (Pa.) University and native of Chester, Pennsylvania, Knox is one of the most influential, passionate and accomplished athletic communications professionals in the country.
He is a past
president of the College Sports Information Directors Association of America (CoSIDA), which made him the third ethnic minority and second African-American president in the organization's history. During his term as president in the 2018-19 academic year, Knox was the first African-American president since 1987.
A member of the Lincoln University and Chester High School Athletic Hall of Fames, Knox graduated from the distinguished NCAA Leadership Institute, was named the 2011 College CoSIDA Rising Star Award winner and has won three Fred Stabley, Jr. writing awards.
Knox has had work published in SLAM magazine, Civil Action magazine and the American Athletic Conference Women's Basketball official souvenir program. He has also written for digital outlets d3hoops.com, the CIAA website and the Womenshoop blog where he covered the WNBA for five years.
The hard work and love he has shown for his profession has resulted in successfully promoting student-athletes from all his previous career stops. Knox was instrumental in having one of his former student-athletes, Ashley Parker, named a finalist for the prestigious 2007 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, the first student-athlete from a HBCU to be named a finalist.
Prior to his tenure at Lincoln, Knox spent five years as a sportswriter for Delaware County Daily Times. In addition to covering several outstanding athletes including Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Dawn Staley and Lisa Leslie, he covered the 2002 and 2003 WNBA all-star games and the 2004 NBA draft.
He is married to Trudell Knox and they are the proud parents of 9-year old son Robert, IV ('RJ"), and 4-year old daughter, Drue Monae. They currently reside in Harford County, Maryland.
