Spartans Offense Channels Sweep over Preseason Favorites

UNCG stays perfect at home and in conference

GREENSBORO, N.C. – After being voted to finish last in the Southern Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, the UNCG Spartans swept reigning SoCon champions, Samford Bulldogs, 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-17) in a roaring Fleming Gym on Friday night to kickstart Homecoming weekend.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spartans and Bulldogs battled in the first set, tying 12 times before either team got to 15. Kayla White led with four points. Brittany Wood, Hannah Knier, and Grey Breen also scored.
  • The fight continued through the rest of the set with neither team letting up.
  • A service ace from Jenna Wiggs and a block from Breen and White would give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • The largest run in the second set was three and it came from both teams, the Bulldogs with two and Spartans with one.
  • UNCG's largest lead was five, 20-15. Samford cut it to one, but White ended the set to give UNCG a 2-0 lead in the match.
  •  The Spartans opened the final set scoring 13 of the first 17 points. White led the scoring with six points, followed by Stephanie Meysembourg, Breen, and Carter.
  • The closest Samford would get to the Spartans was six points, 23-17. Breen would be the last Spartan to score, as the match point would come from a Bulldog error.
