Lyerly Claims Grandover Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Nick Lyerly concluded a week to remember by winning his second consecutive individual championship.

Lyerly enjoyed a superb weekend in walking away with the championship belt of the Grandover Collegiate men's golf tournament Sunday. The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) senior used a pair of rounds of under 70 to shoot 202 during the three-round event at the Grandover Resort.

This is the perfect conclusion to the fall campaign for Lyerly, who won the Wolfpack Invitational last weekend and was named Southern Conference Men's Golfer of the Week Wednesday. So, not a bad seven days for Lyerly, who bogeyed two of 54 holes, which is amazing. For Lyerly, this was his sixth career tournament victory.

UNCG finished third overall thanks to Lyerly and Symon Balbin, who finished tied for ninth overall.

Quotable
Lyerly on winning a second straight event.
"It's always nice to get a win on your home course. I practice out here all the time, so I feel confident knowing the course. Knowing all the hard work that we put out here as a team and it was nice to see it pay off. We had a few more of our parents and spectators out on the course today so it was fun to have some more people on your side out there. Winning twice in two straight tournaments, is not too bad. I am glad I was able to have a nice weekend."

Lyerly on what worked for him this weekend.
"I was pleased with all parts of my game. I didn't hit many fairways on the back nine today, so the driver was probably the weakest part today. But for the tournament, I hit my drivers great, my irons great, and putted pretty good too."

Final Word
UNCG head coach Terrance Stewart on UNCG's performance during the tournament.
"The team fought a good fight this weekend and had a solid third-place finish. We all must improve if we except to contend this spring. Championship golf is won when it matters the most and we haven't shown that yet but we all can learn.  Nick had another great event and is truly one of the top amateurs in the world. He's only getting better and that is scary."
