GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer program finishes its 2021 regular season schedule on the road against East Tennessee State Saturday night.
The stakes are simple for the Spartans who have put themselves in this perfect position. A UNCG victory and it wins the Southern Conference regular season championship. No help is required or scoreboard watching is necessary.
A win would also secure the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SoCon Tournament, meaning that the Spartans wouldn't need to leave Greensboro for a while.
ETSU and UNCG played a pair of tight contests this past spring. They played to a 0-0 draw in the regular season finale. A week later, UNCG defeated ETSU, 2-1, in the SoCon tournament.
A Look At UNCG
- The Spartans are rolling into this match having won three consecutive contests by a 13-1 score.
- UNCG scored three goals in the second half to beat Longwood, 3-1, on Tuesday in a non-conference match.
- UNCG leads the NCAA in points (144), goals (49), assists (46), points per game (9.00), scoring offense (3.06), and goal differential (37).
- Theo Collomb leads the nation in goals (15) and points (34).
- J.C. Ngando has recorded a point in at least five straight matches.
- Ngando and Joey Skinner have combined for 15 assists.
- Ngando and Niclas Wild were named SoCon Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
A Look At ETSU
- The Bucs feature one of the conference's elite goal scorers in Tarik Panntiolzer (10 goals, two assists, 22 points).
- Gabriel Ramos has five assists and nine points.
- Rayhan Carlson-Du Toit (two goals, two assists, six points).
- Carlos Portas found the back of the net in the 82nd minute, but it was too little, too late to spark an ETSU men's soccer comeback, as the Buccaneers dropped a 2-1 decision at Furman last Saturday.
- ETSU's lone conference win was a 3-0 decision against VMI.
Up Next
- UNCG will be at least home for one match in the Southern Conference tournament against an opponent to be determined on Sunday, Nov. 7.
