Sharing Is Caring In UNCG's 69-39 Win Over Winthrop

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team finished with 21 assists during its easy 69-39 victory over Winthrop in a non-conference contest at Fleming Gym Thursday night.

Freshman Isys Grady led UNCG with a career-best 16 points. She also contributed five rebounds and five assists, the most she's had in a game in her fledgling career. Freshman Nia Howard supplied a huge spark off the bench with a career-high 15 points. She made five of UNCG's eight 3-pointers.

Khalis Cain notched her second straight double-double (10 points and 14 rebounds). She also had three steals and a pair of blocked shots.

In recording a season-best in assists, UNCG's beautiful offense was a splendid choreography of swing passes, weak side movement, and precision jump shooting. From the 6 minute, 57-second mark of the second quarter until 3:56 remained, the Spartans recorded an assist on 16 consecutive baskets.

Conducting UNCG's offensive exhibition like a seasoned veteran was freshman Nitzan Amar, who dished six assists, also a career-best. Senior Jaylynn Brown also finished with five assists.

Howard on her shooting performance.
"I felt like there was no need to be scared. We need to take advantage of what we have here. There's a lot of talent. We all can shoot, so it's about knocking them down when it counts. We all shoot after practice, and we knew we just had to be better at making open shots. The coaches push me a lot and believe in me and once I take their energy, I can transfer it into my game, which is nice."

How It Happened
  • Brown opened the game with a 3-pointer on UNCG's first possession, a harbinger of wonderful things to come for the Spartans.
  • Trailing 6-3, CeCe Crudup scored consecutive baskets to give UNCG the lead for good.
  • Howard hit a 3-pointer at the first-quarter buzzer to expand the Spartan lead to 17-10 after 10 minutes.
  • The good times continued for UNCG in the second quarter.
  • In outscoring Winthrop, 17-9, in the second quarter, UNCG made three 3-pointers.
  • Grady made a short basket in the paint to give UNCG a 27-17 lead.
  • UNCG's lead never dropped below double digits after that.
  • Jordan Releford, seeing her first action of the season, swished a 3-pointer from the corner to swell UNCG's lead to 34-17 with 3:15 remaining before intermission.
  • Amar scored a beautiful basket off a pass from Grady to extend the Spartan edge to 47-21 with under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
  • UNCG absorbed a 10-3 Winthrop burst to close the third stanza.

Inside the Numbers

  • UNCG also had 21 assists in that game. It was the last time it had at least 20 assists in a game.
  • UNCG's freshmen combined to score 60.8 percent of UNCG's points (42) against Winthrop.
  • Ten Spartans hit the scoring column.
  • In beating Winthrop for a third consecutive time, UNCG extended its series advantage to 20-11.

Final Word
UNCG head coach Trina Patterson on what she liked about tonight's performance
"I liked our bench play and the play of our freshmen. They are getting better. I think Isys is the one that's made a tremendous jump in the last 14 days. We had 21 assists and that's something we talked about because we had been struggling, so that was huge. Putting the ball in the basket and moving the ball from the start was huge for us. I've seen Nia shoot the ball that way in high school."

Patterson on the fans.
"I am proud of our fans tonight. We had great support and they helped us and helped our energy. The fans were great tonight so that was a great thing for us."
