Spartans Drop Heartbreaker to Runnin’ Bulldogs

CONWAY, S.C.- The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker against Gardner-Webb, 65-63, on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first point of the game was not scored until the 7:46 mark in the first quarter with Gardner-Webb making one free throw. Freshman Nia Howard answered with a layup 11 seconds later.
  • Both teams traded points, but a jumper by Isys Grady would give the Spartans the lead. A lead that they would hold for most of the game.
  • UNCG's largest lead of the first half was six points after CeCe Crudup laced a jumper at the 5:50 mark in the second quarter.
  • Their largest lead of the game was 11 points at 6:27 in the final quarter. Grady sunk two free throws.
  • Khalis Cain scored the final basket for the Spartans. Gardner-Webb battled their way back and took a two-point lead with 10 seconds left in the game.
  • The Spartan's last shot would miss the rim and the Runnin' Bulldogs won, 65-63.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Grady led the game with 19 points. She was followed by Howard and Cain whom both finished with 11.
  • Jaylynn Brown led with three steals. Howard, Crudup, and Aja Boyd also had one.
  • Cain was the only Spartan to have double-digit rebounds with 10.
  • UNCG's bench contributed 22 points.
  • Cain and Grady were perfect from the floor, going 4-for-4 and 5-for-5, respectively.
  • Howard went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.

QUOTES FROM TRINA PATTERSON
"It's a lesson's learned game. We learned some positive and negative lessons about ourselves. One of the negatives was handling pressure. We did not handle their pressure very well. They forced 23 turnovers. We do the same things to other teams, but we don't capitalize on it. The learning part for us is Nia has proven to be a very good three-point shooter. She started in the game, and she had 11 points. We shot the ball well and did a pretty good job defensively, it's just we didn't capitalize on turnovers. They are learning how to win."

UPCOMING
UNCG will continue their four-game road stand with a midweek matchup against Presbyterian. The game is set for Dec. 1 at 6 p.m.
