GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team returns to Tennessee this weekend to visit unbeaten East Tennessee State on Sunday, Feb. 14, and Monday, Feb. 15.

This will be the home opener for ETSU.

The Spartans won't be bringing flowers, candy, or cards with them when they visit Johnson City on Valentine's Day. Instead, they will have their talent, hunger, and heavy hitters with them when they battle the Bucs.

Three of UNCG's matches have gone the distance this season. While the tenacity and effort haven't yielded a positive result yet for the Spartans, they know they are improving with each set. Last weekend, the Spartans dropped a pair of games to Mercer by 3-2 and 3-1 decisions.

Senior Maria Esch led the Spartans with double-doubles in each match. The two-way force has double-doubles in every match. She had a season-high 21 against Chattanooga on Feb. 1. She also had 17 digs in the same match, also a season-high.

Esch is eighth in the SoCon in kills per set (3.26) and 10th in digs per set (3.21).

Sophomore Grey Breen is seventh in the conference in hitting percentage (.280). Breen had a season-best nine kills against Mercer on Sunday, Feb. 7. She leads the Spartans with 17 blocks through four games. Breen has also had two matches with a hitting percentage above .300.

Sophomore Gabby McHugh is seventh in the SoCon in assists per set (7.61). Sophomore Camille Anderson is gaining more confidence and emerging as a reliable force. She is second on the Spartans with 30 kills after a season-high 10 in the Spartans' last match against Mercer.

As a team, the Spartans are fourth in digs per set (15.47).

The Spartans will have their hands full with the Bucs, who are 2-0.

ETSU didn't play last weekend after beating Furman, which explains why it leads the SoCon in blocks (2.89), service aces (2.44), and are second in hitting percentage (.228), opponent hitting percentage (.166), assists (12.1), and kills (12.78).

ETSU middle blocker Sanne Maring was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week and Emily Arnold earned conference setter of the week honors after the victories over Furman.  After four setter of the week accolades in 2019, Arnold netted her first award this season after two matches in which she averaged 49 assists.

UNCG will return home for three consecutive matches beginning with a nonconference challenge against Elon on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 6 p.m.
