GREENSBORO, N.C. – The long-awaited home opener has arrived for the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team. The Spartans welcomes Division II Belmont Abbey to campus. UNCG was supposed to host Davidson this past Sunday.
This will be the Spartans first match since opening the season with a tough 2-0 setback at UNCW 10 days ago. UNCG won six matches at home last season. Belmont Abbey has lost two matches to begin the season. The Crusaders have been outscored, 8-1, in losses to Liberty and Carson Newman.
"We had a good week of training. I'm looking for us to implement our strategy and execute at the highest possible level," UNCG head men's soccer coach
Chris Rich said. "We're very excited to play another opponent especially at home. We have a great setup here at UNCG, so it's always a pleasure playing here."
UNCG was picked third in the SoCon preseason coaches' poll. The Spartans have 12 players returning anchored by All-SoCon preseason selections
Nelson Oceano and
Micah Albert. They combined for seven goals and nine assists last season.
Belmont Abbey was selected third in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll. The Crusaders went 8-7-1 a season ago with a 7-2-1 conference record. In its last game against Carson-Newman,
Davis McBee scored in the 50th minute.
Aaron Madison took four shots with two of them on goal. Noah Stranger made five saves for The Abbey.
UNCG hits the road for its next contest at Gardner Webb on Wednesday, Feb. 24.
