SAVANNAH, GA – Before running out of daylight the UNCG men's golf team finished third after day one and 34 holes at the Invitational at Savannah Harbor. The Spartans finished the first round with a 282. The combined efforts of Justin Emmons 68 (-4), Randall Hudson 70 (-2), Jack Marcotte 71 (-1), and Noah Connor 73 (+1) in the first round put the Spartans in first place by one stroke over fellow Southern Conference members, Mercer.
Competing as individual, Symon Balbin shot par (72) on the first 18 holes.
A solid performance on the course's four par 3 holes helped the Spartans break away from the pack with head coach Terrance Stewart's lineup shooting -7 on par 3's in the first round. Emmons was able to hold onto par after reaching -3 in his first four holes of the back nine, adding another birdie in the front nine before holding onto -4 for the rest of the round.
Hudson (T3) kept the flame alive for the Spartans through the second round of play. Hudson currently sits under par in the second round at (-1) with birdies on five greens.
Stewart and company will look to hold their spot near the top of the board and grab a podium finish tomorrow.
