GREENSBORO, N.C. – There's been tremendous growth and improvement for the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball program since the season started on Jan. 31.

While the ultimate reward for all their hard work, passion, and exemplary moments hasn't manifested itself yet in the win column, the Spartans are getting closer to receiving the great payoff.

UNCG returns home to meet Southern Conference favorite Samford for a pair of conference contests. The game against Elon that was scheduled for this past Thursday has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 18 at 6 p.m.

Four of their previous six matches have gone the distance so the Spartans have played a ton of volleyball this spring. UNCG dropped a pair of matches last weekend at East Tennessee State.

Senior Maria Esch has shined for the Spartans to begin the season. Leading the team with 86 kills and 84 digs, she has five double-doubles this season. Esch is also ninth in the Southern Conference in kills per set (3.19).

Sophomore Gabby McHugh is seventh in the conference in assists per set (7.62). She has 198 assists on the season. In addition to quarterbacking the offense, McHugh has been a two-way standout with 73 digs and 14 blocks.

Sophomore Hannah Knier and Camille Anderson have 44 kills each. Knier also has 14 blocks. Sophomore Grey Breen leads the Spartans with 19 blocks and she has 36 kills. Defensively, junior Jenna Wiggs and Mandy Garvens have combined for 128 digs.

A Look At Samford

The Bulldogs have won four consecutive contests after defeating Wofford twice last week. Samford setter Corinne Meglic was named the Southern Conference's Setter of the Week for the second straight time. Meglic averaged 13 assists per set last week. She had 48 assists in Sunday's 3-1 win, and then she tallied 43 assists in Monday's 3-0 victory. For the season, Meglic leads the SoCon in total assists at 265 and in assists per set at 12.05.

Samford was picked to finish second in the Southern Conference preseason poll and junior outside hitter Lauren Deaton was named to the All-SoCon Preseason Team. She leads the Bulldogs with 125 kills.

Up Next
The Spartans hit the road next weekend to visit Furman on Sunday, Feb. 28 and Monday, March 1.
