CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - UNCG women's basketball (7-15, 5-8), splits its series with Chattanooga (13-9, 8-5) this Sunday after securing a 58-50 victory in game two of the team's series against the Mocs.
Jaylynn Brown and
Pernilla Sorensen secured career-high shooting nights with 22 and 17 points respectively, while freshman
Khalis Cain's five blocks sniffed at a Spartan single game record.
The Spartans hit 50 percent from the field in the first quarter to take an 18-13 lead after the opening 10 minutes. UNCG was the first to hit on the afternoon and led for the entire quarter, getting four points apiece from
CeCe Crudup,
Jaylynn Brown and
Amber Redmond. Cain played a key role in keeping the Spartans' opponents to just five buckets in the first quarter, collecting all three of her team's blocks for the period.
Brown peaked her career-high in points by the end of the second quarter, hitting 4-of-6 over that period to bring her total to 13 on the night. Her nine combined with Sorensen's three gave UNCG 12 points in the period, enough to hold off the hosting Mocs and take a 30-28 lead into the half.
Both teams succumbed to the defensive efforts of their opponents at the start of the second half, with the Spartans and Mocs combining for just 21 points. The lead changed hand four times before the end of the period, while Brown added another five to her total. UNCG's willingness to attack the basket helped the visiting side extend their lead to 41-38, with seven of the Spartans' third quarter points coming from the charity stripe.Â
UTC managed to tie things up at 43-all, three minutes into the fourth quarter, as the pair looked ready for a grudge match that would last to the end of regulation or further. Senior guard
Pernilla Sorensen eliminated any chances of that happening however, scoring 11 unanswered points to give her team the final lead of the afternoon. She was a perfect 4-for-4 with three three-pointers during that three and a half minute run, bringing her total in the contest to a career-high of 17.Â
The lead created by Sorensen proved to be too large for the home team to surmount, with the final reading 58-50 in favor of the Spartans. Brown and Crudup each hit a pair of free throws to help put the game on ice in the final two minutes, with the former grabbing a career best, and game-high, of 22.
>> Cain added two more blocks to her total in the fourth quarter, finishing with a career-high of five. Her total fell two shy of tying a single game program record, recording the most blocks any Spartan has had in a single contest since February of 2017
>> Sorensen's career-high in points came with a 5-for-5 shooting night from three-point range, tying the career-high in threes she set against UNCW earlier this year
>> As a team the Spartans went 6-for-11 (.545) from beyond the arc, the most efficient three-point shooting night they've had since tallying .643 against Georgia State on December 7, 2019Â
