NORFOLK, Va. - UNCG women's tennis starts the 2021 season on the right foot this Thursday, dropping hosts Norfolk State by a final of 5-2. Conceding the doubles point didn't come back to bite the Spartans as the side went 5-1 in singles play to get to 1-0 on the season.
Norfolk State took decisions in the first and second pairing to clinch the doubles point. With the decision already made the final doubles match of the afternoon was cut short, however the combination of
Brianna Gomez and
Juliana Craft held a 4-3 lead before play was halted.
UNCG was in control come singles play however, with all five of their victories coming without a third set.
Sophia Adams retired Norfolk State's top performer by scores of 6-2 and 6-4, while
Brianna Gomez retired the No. 2 seed 6-3 and 6-4.
Craft hardly allowed her opponent the opportunity to score in her debut as a Spartan, surrendering just a single game in a straight set match that ended 6-0 and 6-1 at the No. 6 seed.
Hanna Giddings produced similar results with a 6-1 and 6-2 match in the third seed.
Eugenia Camacho finished the Norfolk State No. 5 in straight sets, but was forced to win a tiebreaker in set one by a score of 18-16, before completing the match win with a 6-2 result in the second frame.
The Spartans move to 1-0 on the season as they prepare for conference play this Saturday at Western Carolina. WCU was the only SoCon team UNCG got the opportunity to face in 2020 before the season was ended, defeating the Catamounts by a final of 5-2.
