HIGH POINT, N.C. - UNCG baseball split its doubleheader with High Point on Sunday, dropping the second of those two games by a final of 4-3. Infielder
Zack Budzik was responsible for bringing in all three of his team's runs, collecting a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.
If there's one thing the Spartans have become accustomed to, it's playing from behind. UNCG has come from a deficit in each of its five victories this year, but were unable to come out on top in this weekend's series finale. After defeating High Point by a one-run margin in the first game of the pair's doubleheader, the Spartans were forced to fight against an opponent's lead once again after spotting the Panthers three runs through the first two innings.
UNCG would even the score after their early misstep, tying things up on a three-run homer from
Zack Budzik in the fourth.
Hogan Windish tallied a one-out double down the left field line, with
Josh Madole adding another base runner with his first walk of the day. With the RBI opportunity on, Budzik sent a 2-1 pitch out to left field collecting his first homer of the year and evening the score at three apiece.
The Spartans' lead only lasted a few outs however, with HPU collecting the go ahead on an unearned run in the top half of the fifth. Righty reliever
Brandon Stephens kept the Panthers scoreless after that, keeping the Panthers from gaining more than a single-run advantage over his 4.1 innings of shutout work. Stephens held High Point to just two hits, facing just two over the minimum and maintaining his 0.00 ERA for the year.
UNCG was able to produce a few base runners in the final four innings but were unable to bring anyone across for the tying run.
Matt Kemp recorded the first hit of his collegiate career in the fifth, while Cavenaugh and Madole both drew walks, but they would remain stranded as the final read 4-3 in favor of the Panthers.
>> Windish had a double in each of the Spartans' doubleheader games on Sunday, driving in a run and crossing home plate three times
>> Budzik also stole his fifth base of the season on Sunday, he's yet to get caught this season
>>
Phillip Sanderson also made an appearance, giving up a single base runner over his 1.2 innings of shutout relief. He and Stephens maintain their 0.00 ERA, with the latter already tossing 8.0 IP on the season
