Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Johns Records First Win In Spartan Loss To Radford

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Newcomer Christopher Johns collected his first singles win as a Spartan this Monday, as UNCG was felled by visiting Radford 6-1 at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center. The match was the Spartans' second contest of the past two days, after facing SoCon rival ETSU less than 24 hours prior. Freshman Hampus Johansson also made his first collegiate appearance, playing alongside Johns in doubles play.

The match between Radford and UNCG's top doubles pairing was left unfinished after the Highlanders grabbed early wins in the second and third seed by scores of 6-2. UNCG's No. 1 pairing of Nico Grewe and Ollie Palmer remain on a two-match win streak.

The Highlanders clinched the team decision with three straight wins in the fifth, fourth and first seeds, before UNCG grabbed its first win of the afternoon at the No. 6. Freshman Christopher Johns defeated Radford's Aditya Balsekar in straight sets, taking the first two frames by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.

Nico Grewe came within a few points of securing his team's second point, while playing the third seed. After dropping a 6-1 decision in the opening set, the senior came back to win 7-5 in the second and forced a tiebreaker in the third. The Highlanders' Guilherme Severin came out on top in a 10-5 final however, while another Spartan loss at the No. 2 completed the 6-1 Radford win.

The Spartans take a breathe between competitions this time, playing the third and final match of their current home stand against Wofford on the 13th. That contest will be UNCG's third SoCon challenge of the year, after falling to Furman and ETSU earlier in the year.
