GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG women's soccer works to their third clean sheet of the season this Friday, celebrating senior day during a 0-0 draw with visiting Wofford. The Spartans' shutout is the second of their past two SoCon matchups, with keeper
Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper making a season-high six saves on the afternoon.
The day started with a short ceremony commemorating the careers of six graduating Spartan seniors;
Kelley Mitchell,
Isabel Pearce,
Sophie Stewart-Hobbs,
Quiqui Hita,
Kaley Tucker and
Julia Brown.
In addition to a pair of appearances in the NCAA Championship Tournament, and two SoCon titles, all six of the day's honorees received SoCon Honor Roll designations for the 2019-20 academic year, with the Spartans turning in a 3.71 GPA as a team this last fall.
The field was tilted in favor of the home team in the opening minutes, but it would be the Terriers that tested the opposing keeper first, with Spartan starting senior
Kelley Mitchell making the first stop of the match during the 13th minute.
UNCG came back in the final stages of the opening half, nearly netting the go ahead before the break. Five of the Spartans' seven attempts in the first 45 came in the last 13 minutes of the half, two of which came off the foot of freshman
Hannah Morton, who finished the contest with a game-high of four attempts at net.
Play opened up in the final 45 minutes of regulation as both sides looked for the go-ahead, and potentially deciding, tally of the night. Spartan right back
Gracie Timbario came up with a scoring chance in the first two minutes of the second half, but it would be Wofford that tested the opposing keeper four times before the 90 minute mark was finished.
Entering the field of play after the 30th minute, Tyler-Cooper made all four necessary stops in the second half to keep Friday night's contest scoreless through regulation, as the Spartans were forced to extra time for the second occasion in 2021.
Tyler-Cooper would be called upon two more times during the two overtime periods, and Morton would pull the trigger for a fourth time, but neither side was able to break the deadlock before the end of the two OT periods.
>>> The Spartans are on a shutout streak of 229 minutes after delivering the clean sheet against Western Carolina this past Sunday. The UNCG defense is allowing .62 goals per 90 minutes against conference foes in 2021
>>> Morton has played an increased role in her team's offense, collecting six shots in her last two appearances combined. She also earned her first points at the collegiate level after assisting on
Ashley Avelino's tally against ETSU last Friday
>>> UNCG remains unbeaten against Wofford all-time, now holding a 24-0-5 record when facing the Terriers
