GREENSBORO, N.C. – After enjoying a week off, the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team continues the South Carolina portion of its schedule by hosting Wofford for a pair of matches on Sunday, March 14 and Monday, March 15 in Fleming Gym.
The Spartans enter these matches against Wofford fresh off of a pair of victories over Furman. Meanwhile, Wofford lost twice last week against Mercer. Wofford is in third place in the SoCon with a 7-4 mark. All four of its conference setbacks were on the road.
UNCG is riding high after knocking off the Paladins in four exciting sets on March 1.
UNCG received contributions from all over the court led by senior
Maria Esch and sophomore
Hannah Knier, who each finished with a team-best 12 kills. Sophomore
Brittany Wood added 11 kills for the second consecutive match and sophomore
Grey Breen chipped in with 10 kills. Wood has been in a killing groove for the Spartans, averaging 10 over her last three matches.
Knier and Breen also had six blocks. Junior
Amanda Garvens had a season best eight kills and 13 digs, her third consecutive match with double-digit digs and junior
Jenna Wiggs had a season-best 25 digs.
With 871 career kills, Esch is fifth in the SoCon in kills per set (3.30). Breen is ninth in the conference in hitting percentage (.257) and Gabby McHugh is sixth in assists per set (8.43).
In its most recent match against Mercer, a 3-0 loss this past Monday, Wofford was led by freshman
Sarah Barham's team-high eight kills and an ace. Senior middle blocker
Riley Coonan registered six kills, two blocks and a dig. Sophomore
Bella Zeman added six kills as well, while recording two digs and a block, while sophomore
Meghan Yaffa contributed a team-best 10 digs and four kills.
Freshman
Emily Hodsdon finished just shy of a double-double with a match-high 23 assists and nine digs, in addition to three kills.
Abbey Richman recorded seven digs, an ace and two assists, as
Kelly Hubbard and
Emory Wyatt round out the contributions on the day with two and one kill, respectively.
The Terriers lead the SoCon in blocks (2.38) and are second in hitting percentage (.225). Barham is the conference leader in hitting percentage (.365). Hodsdon is second in the SoCon in assists per set (10.02).
UNCG continues its home stand by playing its only non-conference match of the season when it hosts Elon on Thursday at 6 p.m. Its next SoCon matches are on the road at The Citadel next Sunday and Monday.
