BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Hugh Knapp won the decisive match at first singles and UNCG rallied for its first victory of the season in a non-conference men's tennis match against Gardner-Webb at the Webb Tennis Complex on Wednesday afternoon.
Knapp, a junior from Greensboro who starred at Grimsley, beat Gardner-Webb's Victor Putter 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 to lift the Spartans (1-6 overall, 0-3 SoCon) to a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs (6-7, 3-0 Big South).
Alexander Zuckerman, a sophomore from Great Britain, improved his season record to 4-3 in singles matches. He defeated Gardner-Webb's Connor Enslin 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at fourth singles to tie the team match at 3-3, pinning the final outcome on the marathon match between Knapp and Putter.
Ollie Palmer and
Nico Grewe posted straight-sets wins at second and third singles for the Spartans.
Grewe, a senior from Raleigh, won twice on Wednesday. He beat Breno Plentz 6-4, 6-2 at third singles, and he teamed with UNCG freshman
Christopher Johns to defeat Plentz and Stefano Puga 6-2 at second doubles.
Gardner-Webb won the doubles point, and the Bulldogs led 3-1 before the singles victories by Grewe, Zuckerman and Knapp closed the match.
UNCG plays again at 1 p.m. Saturday at Samford.
