GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team concludes the road portion of its 2021 spring schedule by visiting The Citadel for a pair of matches on Sunday and Monday at McAllister Fieldhouse. Both matches will be streamed on the ESPN+ platform.
The Spartans have won two straight matches on the road and will look to continue that success. They had a tough week at home, dropping three matches to Wofford twice and Elon once on Thursday.
In its most recent match, outside hitters
Maria Esch and
Brittany Wood finished with 10 kills apiece. Esch also had seven digs and had two blocks. Wood, a sophomore, finished with a .500 kill percentage, while freshman
Haven McPeek set 29 assists and made five digs. Junior
Jenna Wiggs had 16 digs.
Wood has double digit kills in three of her last five matches for the Spartans.
UNCG and The Citadel split a pair of matches in 2019 with each team protecting home court.
In The Citadel's most recent matches, the Bulldogs split with ETSU. After losing on Sunday, the Bulldogs captured a 3-2 decision after dropping the first two sets. That result also marked the first time in program history that The Citadel had come from two sets down to defeat a Southern Conference opponent in five sets.
Monday's come-from-behind win featured four double-double from the Bulldogs as
Sharlissa de Jesus (18 kills, 12 digs),
Makaya Middleton (14 kills, 11 digs),
Mellanie King (10 kills, 10 digs) and
Amie Greene (45 assists, 10 digs) all hit that mark. de Jesus led the team with 25 combined kills across the two matches at ETSU.
King enters this weekend just seven kills short of 1,000 for her career; the senior would become the sixth member of the 1,000-kill club for the Bulldogs should she reach that mark against the Spartans.
UNCG returns home to conclude the regular season against Western Carolina on Sunday, March 28 and Monday, March 29.
