GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG baseball is unable to send Samford off with a loss this Sunday, as the visiting Bulldogs collect an 8-3 victory in the series finale. Second baseman Hogan Widish drove in all three of the Spartans' runs on the day, delivering a double and his sixth home run of 2021 in the process.
After two excellent innings from Spartan starter
Jared Mathewson, the visitors broke through in the third, drawing a walk in the leadoff at bat before plating a pair on back-to-back singles. The Bulldogs took a three-run lead in the third after loading the bases on two more knocks and a hit by pitch, plating run number three on their third single of the frame.
While a run did come across for Samford in the third, righty
Kross Robinson provided an excellent appearance in relief. The Spartans' usual closer inherited bases loaded one out into the fourth, allowing just one to score over the remainder of the frame. Robinson struck out four over his 2.2 innings of work, with a single unearned run credited to his final stat line.Â
With the Bulldogs being shutout in the next two offensive frames,
Hogan Windish made things interesting during the sixth with a two-run bomb to left.
Corey Rosier extended his hitting streak to seven straight games, leading off the home half with an ambush single to left. The outfielder looked as though he might be stranded after a pair of outs were recorded in the inning, until Windish put a drive into a 2-1 pitch to get the Spartans on the board and back within a run of their opponents.
Samford responded in the seventh however, hanging five runs on the Spartans on four hits and a UNCG defensive error.Â
Windish got one back for the Spartans during the eighth. After a
Pres Cavenaugh walk Windish stroked a two-out double off the left field wall to score the redshirt-freshman, but that's all that the Spartans would get offensively in the last two innings as the final read 8-3 in favor of the visitors.
>>> Windish finished 2-for-3 with three RBI at the plate, scoring a single run. His six home runs are a Spartan-high in 2021, while his 20 runs driven in trail only Rosier (23) for a team best
>>> Rosier has hit in his last seven appearances, but has also reached first safely in the Spartans' last 12 games. He hit 8-for-18 (.444) over UNCG's four games this past week, going 5-for-13 (.385) against the Bulldog pitching staffÂ
>>>
Josh Madole and
Zack Budzik each tallied triples against Samford on Sunday. Madole's triple was the third of his career while Budzik's was his second of the season. The Spartans already have 10 three-baggers in 2021
