UNCG Sweeps Elon In Pair of Games

ELON, N.C. -- Sophomore right-hander Morgan Scott came on with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, and she struck out the only two hitters she faced to get out of the jam and finish off UNCG's doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon at Elon's Hunt Softball Park.

The Spartans (13-6 overall) won three of four games against Elon (7-11 overall) in the weekend home-and-home series, sweeping Sunday's doubleheader by scores of 15-7 and 9-6.

UNCG pounded out 20 hits in the two games, including seven home runs.

Scott (6-3, 2.75 ERA) started the opener and struck out six in five innings to notch the win. She notched her first save of the season by getting the final two outs in the second game.

Senior center fielder Makenna Matthijs and junior left fielder Hannah Kincer hit two home runs apiece for the Spartans in the opener. Kincer had five RBIs and Matthijs four RBIs in the game.

Senior right fielder Katie Stettler, Matthijs and Kincer all homered in the top of the sixth inning, when UNCG scored six runs to extend its lead to 15-2.

Junior catcher Delaney Cumbie also hit a solo home run in the game for UNCG.

Freshman right-hander Alina Varga (6-0, 4.05 ERA) got the final out in relief of sophomore lefty Alex Rodriguez to close out the first game, and Varga picked up the win as the starter in the second game. She struck out six in 6.1 innings.

Sophomore third baseman Maycin Brown went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for UNCG in the second game.

Senior designated player Kayleigh Willis was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and senior second baseman Jasmine Palmer was 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Elon lead-off hitter Mekayla Frazier was a combined 5-for-8 with two doubles and a triple to lead the Phoenix.
