Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Spartans Fall In SoCon Opener

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - UNCG women's soccer receives its first loss in SoCon play on Friday, falling to ETSU 2-1 on the road. Center back Ashley Avelino opened the Spartans' scoring account for 2021, hitting the back of the net for the first goal of her career.

UNCG jumped on the Bucs early, with the Spartans drawing a foul from on the edge of the 18. Freshman Hannah Morton lined up for the free kick and proceeded to collect her first points at the collegiate level. Morton delivered a ball to the back post that was finished off by Avelino's right foot, giving the Spartans the early lead in Johnson City.

ETSU attempted to kick up the intensity but it would be the Spartans that delivered the next scoring opportunity, as another freshman, Dalani Stephens saw her attempt turned away by the Bucs keeper.

Coming off a clean sheet against NC State and a SoCon Defensive Player of the Week selection, starting Spartan keeper Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper collected both of ETSU's shots on goal, keeping the Bucs scoreless in the opening 45 minutes.

The home team didn't waste time coming out of the halftime break however, with ETSU finding the equalizer on a set piece opportunity of their own in the 48th minute. The Bucs found the go-ahead not far long afterward, doubling their tally with another goal in the 61st.

Trailing by a goal, the Spartans began to open up play and push for the game-tying tally in the final 30 minutes. UNCG reeled off five attempts at net in the final seven minutes, steering three on goal before the final whistle. Both Quiqui Hita and Carolina Woods would see their potential equalizers turned away by the ETSU keeper however, as the final score finished 2-1 in favor of the Bucs.

>> The Spartans are no strangers to having center backs that score goals, with five of the team's tallies coming from Kayla Campbell in 2019
>> Tyler-Cooper made four stops on the night to bring her season total to seven, she's averaging .90 goals against on the season after her shutout of NC State
>> Stephens, Hita, Woods and Avelino each took two shots on the evening, while both of Hita's attempts were on frame
