Spartans Collect Conference Victory Over The Citadel

GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG men's tennis picked up an all-important Southern Conference win this Saturday, defeating The Citadel at UNCG Tennis Courts by a final of 5-2.The win over the visiting Bulldogs gives the Spartans back-to-back match wins, while Nico Grewe and Alexander Zuckerman's victories in singles play gives the pair three straight individual wins.

UNCG conceded the first point of the day, with The Citadel coming out on top in doubles play. The Bulldogs grabbed wins on courts one and two, but the combination of Roger Rogowski and Cooper Wyett kept the visitors from sweeping with a 7-5 decision on court number three. Rogowski and Wyett are on a three-match win streak when playing with one another as well, while their five season wins as a duo are matched only by the Spartans' top pairing of Nico Grewe and Ollie Palmer.

The Spartans came back from their early deficit quickly, with Palmer taking a straight set victory against The Citadel's No. 1, 6-5, 6-2. UNCG grabbed wins on five of six singles matches to complete the Saturday win, with their lone individual loss coming on court six.

The home team took the final four available points Saturday afternoon, winning the fifth, second, third and fourth seeds in order.

Roger Rogowski was victorious with 6-4 and 6-1 set wins on court five, while Grewe downed the Citadel's No. 2, 6-2 and 6-4. Grewe's victory was the senior's third consecutive and his sixth of the season, putting him one short of team leader Zuckerman who picked up his seventh of the year. Like Grewe, Zuckerman is also riding a three-match win streak, and finished off his opponent in straight sets.

Hugh Knapp dispatched his opponent in straight sets as well, winning his first match at the third seed by scores of 6-1 and 6-4.

The Spartans' 5-2 victory puts them seventh in the Southern Conference this season, but just a single win back of No. 5 Chattanooga. UNCG faces its final test of the non-conference season at Elon this Thursday, before wrapping up the spring against UTC on Saturday.
