Spartans Close Non-Conference Slate

ELON, N.C. - UNCG men's tennis came within a point of a third straight win this Thursday, with the Spartans conceding a 4-3 decision to hosts Elon. Nico Grewe grabbed his fourth straight singles win on the night, tying for a team-high seventh individual win this season.

The Spartans gained the early advantage on Thursday, grabbing the doubles point for a sixth time on the season. Despite conceding a decision on court two, UNCG came roaring back with back-to-back victories on courts one and three. Ollie Palmer and Nico Grewe tallied their sixth doubles win of the season against Elon's top pairing, taking their match by a final of 6-4. The combo of Cooper of Wyett and Roger Rogowski collected their sixth win of 2021 as well, but were forced to take their victory on an 8-6 tie breaker. Wyett and Rogowski are on a four-match winning streak while playing together, and haven't lost as partners since March 20th.

The home side took back the advantage with three straight-set victories at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 seeds, but all remaining singles contests would require three frames to find a winner.

Ollie Palmer evened things up with Elon's top individual with a 6-4 win in set two, but was unable to come away with the comeback win as the home team grabbed the fourth and deciding point.

The Spartans did take the last two decision of the night however.

In just his fourth singles match as a Spartan, freshman Christopher Johns grabbed the second individual win of his collegiate career against the Phoenix' sixth seed. The first-year Spartan took a 7-6 loss in the first set, but responded with back-to-back wins to close out the match, defeating his opponent 6-4 and 6-3.

Nico Grewe exchanged 6-3 scores with Elon's No. 2 seed as he and his opponent continued to trade punches throughout. Trailing by six games to five, Grewe clawed back to win the 12th game, grabbing the tie-breaker 7-4 to give his team its second point of the night.

The Spartans close out the season at home against Chattanooga, celebrating senior day for Grewe, Palmer and Eric Whisnant this coming Saturday at noon.
