GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG men's tennis fought to a tight finish on Friday, with visiting Coastal Carolina just sliding by the Spartans in a 4-3 final in Greensboro.
The Spartans claimed the doubles point for the second time in their past three matches, with wins on courts one and two.
Ollie Palmer and
Nico Grewe combined for the 6-3 win against the Chanticleers' top pairing, collecting the two's second straight win as partners.
Doubles play finished in the second seed where
Alexander Zuckerman and
Christopher Johns were forced to a tie-breaker. The Spartans' second doubles duo took that tie-breaker 7-4, playing alongside one another for just the third time this year.
Nico Grewe doubled the Spartans' lead at the start of singles play, downing CCU's No. 2 in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-4. The senior's win gives him four singles victories in 2021, competing at the second seed for the first time this spring.
Coastal Carolina secured three straight wins on courts five, one and six to take their first team lead, before Zuckerman grabbed his team-best fifth singles win of the season to tie things up.
The afternoon's final would come down to the result in the third seed, where
Hugh Knapp fought with the Chanticleers' Diego Giraldi for the winning point. Knapp dropped the first frame against Giraldi 6-4, but immediately rebounded with a win in set two by the same score. As the only singles match to go to three sets on the evening, the final frame would end 6-2 in favor of the visitor however as UNCG was forced to take the 4-3 loss.
The Spartans will get no chance to rest as they turn around to play Davidson on the road this Saturday at 1 p.m. UNCG has won seven of its last eight matches against the Wildcats, and will be looking for back-to-back wins against the side.
