DAVIDSON, N.C. - UNCG men's tennis splits its two matches this weekend, following up a one-point loss to Coastal Carolina on Friday with a convincing 5-2 match win over Davidson on the road this Saturday. The victory is the Spartans' second on the road this season after defeating another in-state rival, Gardner-Webb, in Boiling Springs on St. Patrick's Day.
The Spartans secured the doubles point for a second straight day, while grabbing wins on courts two and three. The Wildcats took the first doubles match 6-2 in the top pairing, before UNCG evened things on a 7-5 victory at the No. 3. The second seed would be back and forth, requiring a tie-breaker that the combo of
Alexander Zuckerman and
Christopher Johns would take 7-3. Zuckerman and John's win is their second in a row, as the pair played alongside one another for the fourth time this season.
It didn't take long for Davidson to even things up, taking the match on court six, 6-2, 6-1.
Roger Rogowski took the No. 5 singles match in straight sets, taking the tie breaker 7-2Â to give his team the lead back.Â
Another straight set win for
Ollie Palmer against Davidson's top individual gave UNCG its third point of the afternoon, with Palmer also requiring a tie-breaker win in the second to clinch the victory.Â
The Wildcats secured a win on court three to keep things interesting but the decision became final shortly after, as the Spartans sweeping the last two singles contests of the evening.Â
Nico Grewe grabbed a 6-3 set one win before allowing his opponent at the No. 2 to even things up. The senior took down his opponent 7-5 in the third, scoring the deciding point for his team on his fifth individual win of the spring.Â
With the match already in hand, Zuckerman tallied his team best sixth singles win of the season at the fourth seed. The sophomore nearly took down his opponent in straight sets but lost the tie-breaker in set two, coming back with a 6-3 victory in the third and deciding frame to give the Spartans a 5-2 win.
