Collomb Focused On Bigger Goals After Stellar Season

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Theo Collomb is driven.

The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) freshman is not satisfied with the seven goals he's scored this season, a total that led the Southern Conference. He's not impressed with the postseason accolades he earned as a member on the SoCon All-Freshman Team and SoCon co-Freshman of the Year platitudes.

Don't get it twisted, Collomb is appreciative that he was able to make meaningful contributions to the Spartan success this season. He's been a key cog in their Southern Conference championship machine. An economics major, the 5-foot, 11-inch Collomb is focused on bigger things.

"I want to try and keep going and make my family proud," Collomb said. "My dad played professionally. I was in a professional structure, but now I'm not. So, since I am not a professional, I will not be satisfied with what I've done. But it's always good to know that I'm making them proud with what I'm doing right now."

Collomb, who is from Clermont, France, has been playing soccer since he was 3 years old. His dad, Jerome, played professionally. Soccer has been Collomb's blood and his aspirations were right in front of him.

His family has motivated him all season.

"All the people around me, so my family, people not in my family, and my grandma have made a difference for me," Collomb said. "It was pretty hard (leaving France and coming to America was hard) because of my family first. I felt it was a good decision for me."

Collomb and the Spartans are thrilled to be hosting Omaha in the 2020 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship tournament on Thursday, April 29 at 6 p.m. The Spartans enter the NCAA tournament against a talented Maverick squad riding a six-match unbeaten streak.

Thursday's winner will battle No. 4 seed Stanford on Sunday, May 2 at 5 p.m. in the second game of a second-round doubleheader. Penn State meets Massachusetts in the first contest at 1 p.m.

"I think we know we are lucky to be here," Collomb said. "There are 36 teams in the country that can still train and compete right now. We know we are lucky to be one of those teams and we are trying to get the work done. We are grateful for this chance."

Collomb's combination of strength and speed has created headaches for opposing defenses. He's savvy in traffic and his rock-solid frame makes it difficult for defenders to knock him off the ball. After all, you can't bump, what you can't catch. He tears through defenses like the Tasmanian devil.

Collomb has enjoyed some memorable moments this season.

He scored game-winning goals in consecutive contests against Belmont (in overtime) and Wofford (early in the second half). He also scored the first goal of the SoCon semifinal against ETSU. His performance against Belmont earned Collomb SoCon Player of the Week honors.

UNCG head coach Chris Rich knew he was getting a polished gem in Collomb.

"Theo is a forward that comes from a fantastic youth setup in France," Rich said in August. "He has the versatility to play anywhere in the front three, but we expect him to play more at the center forward position. His movement off the ball is elite, especially in the penalty area. We expect Theo to score a lot of goals in Greensboro."

Collomb arrived at UNCG with significant playing experience as he scored nine goals with Clermont Foot 63 II over two seasons. He made 30 appearances and 15 starts for the Tier 5 club.

"As a freshman, it's always good to be congratulated for the work I've done," Collomb said. "I'm just taking it game by game to see what will happen next. When I first came here, I had some expectations and some about the levels in America. We have a very nice group here. We all get along with each other. We have a good coaching staff and I think we can do great things here."
