GREENVILLE, S.C. – Maycin Brown snapped a scoreless tie by blasting a three-run homer in the fifth inning to help the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team beat Furman, 4-0, in a key Southern Conference contest Saturday at Pepsi Field.
Brown's fifth homer of the season was the centerpiece to UNCG's four-run fifth inning. It provided all the support that winning pitcher
Morgan Scott needed as the Spartans terminated a three-game skid.
Brown leads the Spartans with a .411 batting average after collecting a hit in all three games against Furman.
Meanwhile, Scott tied her career best with 14 strikeouts for the second time this season. It's the third most strikeouts by a pitcher in a single game. She struck out 14 against Elon two weeks ago on March 12. In two games this weekend against Furman, Scott struck out 26 hitters. It was the third time this season she finished with double-digit strikeouts.
Scott had at least two strikeouts in every inning except the third in which she didn't strike out anybody. This was Scott's second shutout this season.
Not that Scott needed it, but
Samantha Lagrama provided an insurance run with a RBI single that scored
Makenna Matthijs, who doubled after Brown's homer, in the fifth inning. It was UNCG's 28th time this season scoring at least three runs in an inning.
UNCG returns to action Wednesday when it visits Appalachian State at 5 p.m. The Mountaineers won two of three against UNCG during the opening weekend of this season.
