GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team will board a bus for a road trip for the first time in 165 days when it makes the 118-mile drive to Winthrop for a Saturday night showdown.
It'll also be the first meeting between UNCG and Winthrop since 2013.
Thanks to hosting the SoCon Tournament and NCAA Tournament last season, a nice summer break, and a season-opening homestand, the Spartans finished a stretch of eight consecutive matches on campus.
UNCG will find a fired-up Winthrop squad waiting for it upon stepping off the bus. This is Winthrop's home opener. UNCG, as always, is excited about the challenge of playing on a different pitch against a quality opponent.
The Spartans will be looking to rebound from a tough 2-1 overtime setback to Saint Joseph's on Sunday. It was a match in which UNCG finished with 10 players. Meanwhile, Winthrop is riding the momentum from a dominating 3-1 victory over Furman.
LAST TIME OUT FOR UNCG: Daniel Mangarov notched his first goal of the 2021 season off a penalty kick in the 87th minute against Saint Joseph's this past Sunday. The Spartans almost won the game in overtime.
Joey Skinner's header was stopped by Saint Joseph's backup keeper Christian Matson with five minutes remaining in the first overtime.
Theo Collomb led the Spartans with four shots.
BIG SOUTH BUDDIES: Winthrop is the third Big South opponent the Spartans are facing in 2021. UNCG is 1-1 against the Big South this season, dropping a 3-1 season-opening decision to Campbell and beating Gardner-Webb, 2-0.
NEAR THE TOP: UNCG's offense leads the SoCon in shots per game (12.25). The Spartans are second in goals per game (1.75), third in points (4.75) and assists (1.25). Collomb leads the SoCon in shots per game (4.00).
A LOOK AT WINTHROP: Brigham Larsen scored twice against Furman. It was the first two-goal performance by a Winthrop freshman since Cameron Thayer had two against College of Charleston on Sept. 25, 2019 in a 3-2 win in double overtime. Jonathan Foster also scored against the Paladins. Winthrop's only setback was a 4-1 decision to South Carolina. The Eagles opened the season by beating Stetson, 4-3.
Winthrop returns 19 players for the 2021 and added 11 new players. This includes sophomore
Grayson Woodard, who led the team in scoring in the spring. Among the returnees are eight players that started at least six of the nine games in the spring and all three goalkeepers that split time with
Dean DePinto and
Sam Jones playing four games and
Sam Bell playing three games.
