Quick Start Helps UNCG Cruise To 6-0 Win Over Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Theo Collomb led a dominant UNC Greensboro men's soccer performance by scoring a pair of goals and collecting an assist during a 6-0 victory over Winthrop in a non-conference match at Eagle Field Saturday evening.
 
Notable
This was the most goals UNCG has scored in a single-game under third-year head coach Chris Rich, surpassing the five it scored against UNC Asheville on Sept. 18, 2019.
 
There's something about the state of South Carolina and the letter W because the last time UNCG scored six goals in a game was on Oct. 17, 2017 in a 6-1 road win against Wofford.

UNCG head coach Chris Rich on his team's performance.
"We needed that. Offensively, we were very good especially starting the way we did. We won the first half in the first nine minutes. Our level of energy was good and the team executed at a high level. The clean sheet is impressive and the way we defended allowed us to be successful offensively."
 
Rich on how can UNCG build off this effort.
"It was important for us to get in a rhythm, fine-tune our lineup, and get our rotations together. We feel like we have a better feel of how we want to play. It's fantastic to win on the road. We are continuing to grow as a group. Now, we have to recover quickly because we have another tough game against a good team in a couple of days.
 
How It Happened
  • This one was decided early as UNCG scored three goals in the first 12 minutes.
  • Goals from Joey Skinner, J.C. Ngando, and Theo Quartey gave UNCG a 3-0 lead at intermission.
  • Basile Marc notched the assist on Skinner's goal in the third minute.
  • Collomb recorded the assist on Ngando's first-career goal as a Spartan in the seventh minute.
  • Five minutes later Quartey found the back of the net.
  • Collomb scored both of his goals during an eight-minute stretch of the second half.
