GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team begins its 2022 campaign with a pair of matches on Friday, Jan. 21 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans will meet Kennesaw State at 1 p.m. and North Carolina Central at 5 p.m. This will be UNCG's first meeting against NCCU since 2014.
A Look At UNCG
- The UNCG men benefit from the return of graduate student Nico Grewe, who led UNCG with eight singles victories in 2021.
- He was 5-0 at No. 2 singles.
- The doubles team of Roger Rogowski and Cooper Wyett went 7-2, winning their last five matches in a row.
- Grewe, Alexander Zuckerman, Rogowski, and Hugh Knapp all won singles matches during the SoCon fall tournament in Belton, South Carolina.
- The Spartans will be trying to win their first season opener since it knocked off Winthorp, 5-2, in 2020.
A Look At Kennesaw State
- Members of the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Owls split two matches last weekend, beating Wofford, 6-1 and falling to Presbyterian, 5-2.
- Matthew Terry is 2-0 at No. 1 singles for Kennesaw State.
- Terry was named the ASUN Player of the Week.
- In addition to Terry, Kevin Patel was a singles winner for KSU against Presbyterian.
- Kennesaw State finished 7-12 in 2021.
- KSU advanced to semifinals of the ASUN Conference tournament before falling to Liberty.
- The Owls return seven players from last year's squad and welcome three newcomers to the roster.
- Kennesaw State was picked fifth in the ASUN preseason coaches' poll.
A Look At North Carolina Central
- This is the Eagles' season-opener.
- Amit Baran, Shaka Cristellotti, and Sebastian Pino are key players for NCCU.
- NCCU went 1-8 last season.
